Sara
From Poland via Israel to Australia
She came into my life like a breath of fresh air
peeled and ate an orange during arithmetic
spoke no word of English but we didn't care
it was love at first sight of her beautiful red hair
inseparable through primary and high school too
singing Hava Nagila in the back of the class room
when we were in trouble, it was forever we two
I was always welcome in her home
they taught me about normal family life
her parents I loved as if they were my own
at every meal a plate was set for me
Ma's chicken soup I still cook today
my eternal gratitude for those times
will never fade away
We parted, I left first for Europe, she to Israel
for years we wrote to each other and kept in touch
marriage, and problems took over our lives
we both had enough to deal with, it was all too much
the letters stopped, for many, many years
she was always on my mind, never stopped to adore her
when I searched for her again in Israel she was gone
and life went on, our own diaspora
I'll never forget the joy when I finally found her
back in Australia with her family base
emails sent back and forth we were back on track
my heart nearly burst with the first embrace
time was limited with my longest friend
we caught up with the past, the future out of reach
we took a long walk on the sea shore
and again I danced with Sara on the beach
