The Book

Heard a sound, turned around the book had fallen to the floor
from the corner of the table where it had lain since first I brought it home
no other movement in the room, the book face down near the door
a constant reminder of the past and all the mysterious unknown

picking it up, flicking the pages, my heart skips a beat
it has never been opened, just sitting there biding its time,
the pages flutter from front to back, there's blood on every sheet
a speckle here, a teardrop there, smears and smudges and streaks so fine

I hold the book once more real close then throw it into the fire
its red cover so poignantly shiny, quivers in the heat
it does not burn, it does not burn, the hungry flames lost desire
a log moves and the book flies out landing at my feet

I place it carefully in a drawer and lock it for safe keeping
see if you can spook it now from afar, as I lay down to sleep
in the silence of the night, above the sounds of me softly weeping
the flutter of pages, can be discerned from its wooden keep
