You are my woman, you are a woman but
this morning I waited alongside you
for you to wake up and
when you did
you stayed motionless and looked startled
with the innocence and humiliation of a child,
your face at its fairest and
your eyes veiled and half covered by
your eyelids.

You are a big girl and
understand the world so well
but you looked at me
and chose not to move
nor acknowledge me much or anything
for another bout of time.
Then finally you squirmed but only to turn
your body around and bury it,
eyes closed, I know,
deep into my lap,
your back against my breast.

You are my lady, you are a lady but
I can feel your body still exuding
the warmth of sleep;
your red hair looks volatile as it hides you from my sight
and even though I know the shades of colour
that it can adopt,
it looks all but sandy in the half dark.

You are my woman and
a woman of many appearances
and they all start in the morning
as I wait for you
to wake up alongside me.
