The eleventh day
of the eleventh month
at eleven o'clock
in 1918, we remember
the war to end all wars

'In Flanders Fields'
the poppies grow
amongst the dead
we did not know
in the war to end all wars

today we wear the poppy
to remember them and the rest -
all those who fought and died
for their country they did their best
since the war to end all wars

the poppy, the symbol, will remain
we shall wear one forever on this day
in respect, gratitude and sorrow
knowing full well, though we pray
there will never be, I daresay
a war to end all wars...

  ja, oorlog is nergens goed voor, de grootste oorlog begint volgens sommigen in de oostelijke landen waar israel, irak, iran, palestina zal escaleren in de grootste wereldoorlog waarin mogelijk ook echt kernwapens zullen gebruikt worden, intussen leef ik van dag tot dag, met respect gelezen killea x

  It's part of the human being. Het is echt wel fijn dat we het herinneren, zoals jij, met zoveel vuur in je mooie gedicht. Zo vergeten onze kinderen het ook niet.

  de "poppy's" zijn een algemeen, vooral inde westhoek en in het buitenland, gekend symbool ter herdenking van het einde van "de groote oorlog".
  Spijtig genoeg moeten BV's in de rest vlaanderen op pad om dit kenbaar te maken.
  Prachtig gedicht
  killea: In Oz every school had a remembrance ceremony on this day, and old veterans would stand for hours selling poppies to wear, the money going to help needy veterans of all the wars since. It was always a most emotional day, as every suburb had it's own memorial stone where wreaths were placed and we, solemn and with dignity would sing the hymn Lest we forget together with those who came to honour their dead. Although that was long ago I still feel the same emotions on this day. Could not find a poppy to buy anywhere here! Many thanks for you fine FB Elpe
